Vilnius Defensive Wall

  • Vilnius

A part of the Vilnius Defensive wall built in the first half of the 17th century. It was severely damaged during mid-17th century wars, and in the 18th century the Bastion became the city's dump. Romantic legends tell about monsters living in basements of the Bastion. Following detailed archeological and architectural research, a weapons museum was established in the Bastion which was restored in 1986. In 2016, the National Museum of Lithuania set up an exposition on the history of the Vilnius Defensive wall and weapons in the Bastion (after repairs carried out in 2011 - 2015). It consists of three parts: a rectangular city wall tower, a horseshoe-shaped 110-meter long underground gallery and a 48-meter long tunnel connecting the tunnel and the tower. The Bastion is a valuable, original monument of defensive architecture of the Renaissance epoch.
