72,000 photos were taken as part of a project called 'Les archives de la Planète' [The Archives of the Planet] from 1908 until 1931. The project was sponsored by a French banker named Albert Kahn. In 1912 French geographer Jean Brunhes worked in collaboration on the project as well. The project is described as 12 photographers who visited up to 50 countries to document and witness different cultures before the possibility of some of these aspects changing and/or disappearing. The article goes on to describe in more detail photographs taken in the Balkans during 1912-1913 during the First Balkan War. It also describes the 'autochrome technique' which allowed the creation of some of the first color photographs. The reproductions of the photographs are on display at the Albert Khan Museum in Paris.
