Reports of a fortified building or, better, of a cluster of constructions up on the hill, owned by the Counts of Polcenigo, date back to medieval times. At the beginning of the 18th century, part of the structure was crumbling to pieces, either burnt or run down. In 1738 the Counts decided to have a new construction built on what remained of the old one. The austere and uncomfortable manor was replaced by a new luxurious palace, known as 'The Castle', in spite of its resemblance to a Venetian Palace, with plenty of rooms, a dance hall, stuccoes and fireplaces designed by the Venetian architect Matteo Lucchesi. A grand flight of about 360 (or 365) stairs connected the main building with Via Coltura and a steep paved path, departing from Via San Giacomo, led straight uphill, to the north-western part of the castle. In the mid 1800s, following hereditary feuds among the Counts, the structure went deserted and nothing was done to prevent the relentless crumbling down of the whole structure. Following the 1936, and 1976 earthquakes the roof and the floors caved in and pieces of furniture, works of art, stone and marble works either sold or removed. In the late 1970s the perimeter walls were fortified to make the area safer.
