On September 5, 1816, the British naval ships Alceste and Lyla landed at Maryangjin, Seocheon, in order to map the west coast of Korea. On that date, Captains Murray Maxwell and Basil Hall presented a Bible to Daebok Cho, local governor of Maryangjin. For the first time in history, the Bible had arrived on Korean soil.

The Bible was introduced to Korea in 1816 by the officers of British ships that anchored in Maryang Port in 1816. HMS Alceste (Captain Murray Maxwell) and the Lyra (Captain Basil Hall), which were exploring Chinese coastal waters and the Yellow sea (the West coast of Korea) with the aim of securing a marine trade route, dropped anchor at Maryang Port on Galgot on September 5, 1816. They presented three books, one of which was the Bible, to Jo Dae-bok, a local official of Maryang Port, and Lee Seung-yeol, the governor of Biin-hyeon (the former name of Biin-myeon). The Memorial Park for the location of the Bible's First Arrival in Korea contains replicas of the Lyra and the Panokseon (a shio of the Joseon Dynasty) which the official Jo Dae-bok boarded in order to make inquiries about the first foreign ships to enter Maryang port.
