Costești, situated in the Rîșcani district of the Republic of Moldova, stands as a town in the northwestern region of the country. Positioned along the shores of the Ciuhur River, where it meets the Prut River, the city is also influenced by the waters of the Costești-Stânca reservoir. Encompassing an expanse of 85 hectares, the town is inhabited by around 3,500 residents as of 2014. Notably, within Costești lies one of the two hydroelectric power plants in the entirety of the Republic of Moldova. On June 3, 1492, the initial record emerges, wherein Alexandru cel Bun (Alexander I of Moldavia) bestowed land beyond the Prut to the boyars Stanciu, Lazar, and Costea—offspring of Oana and vornic of Suceava. This grant encompassed '10 villages' for settlement, among them the one positioned at the confluence of the Ciuhur. An additional recorded mention originates from August 15, 1499, as Ștefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great) validated Efrem, a servant in the royal court, as the overseer of a portion constituting one-third of the estate within the village of Costești. This estate was located near the convergence point of the Ciuhur River and had been acquired for 200 Tatar zlotys from Oliușca. During the 19th century, the locality found itself within the jurisdiction of the Zabriceni volost. By 1902, the town comprised 187 households, accommodating a populace of 912 individuals, all of whom were Romanian peasants.Following the establishment of the Costești-Stânca hydrotechnical junction in 1975, the settlement positioned in the valley was relocated further up the shoreline. The former village became submerged beneath the waters of the Costești-Stânca reservoir. Accompanying the newly constructed private homes of the local inhabitants, there were additions of 5 five-story apartment buildings and 24 two-story residential blocks.
