The brothers Janaki (1878-1954) and Milton (1880-1964) Manaki are an inseparable part of Bitola, a synonym for the city. Figuratively speaking, they belong ethnically to the Balkans, while culturally they are part of the world cultural heritage. They are Balkan representatives in the most positive sense of the word. The complete works of art of the Manaki brothers can simply be summed up in just two of their statements. Milton's: 'for me and for the history', and Janaki's: 'if you have your own photo then your image will stay for future generations'. The years after the first screening at the Grand Cafe in Paris, in 1905, brother Milton and Janaki Manaki with their now legendary 'Camera 300' (the original is in the Historical Archive in Bitola) bought from London by Charles Urban Trading Company, from the model 'Bioscope' under serial number 300, took the first moving pictures in the Balkans. They are the first cameramen in the Balkans. On their photographic and film material with great documentary value, they recorded all the important events in the Balkans: folk customs, rituals, celebrations, the First and Second Balkan Wars, the Young Turk Revolution, the First and Second World Wars. The Manaki Brothers Film Festival is established in their honor, and is being held in Bitola. Cinematography in the Balkans began with their 'Camera 300' and so the main prize of this film festival is being named after it. The films of the latest world production compete for the Gold, Silver and Bronze Camera 300, which is awarded to the best director of photography. The first film was shown in 1921, in their new open-air cinema 'MANAKI' on Shirok Sokak. The movie theater was a temporary solution that did not satisfy the brothers. So they later built a new cinema building where the first screening took place on December 1, 1923. The project for the new cinema building was simple, but two walls collapsed during the construction, which created new financial difficulties for the Manaki Brothers. The cinema operated with variable success. It changed several owners before burning to the ground in 1939. Today's Manaki cinema is built on a location close to the former one and is a brand new facility.
