Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (May 6, 1918 – November 2, 2004) was an esteemed Emirati royal, statesman, humanitarian, and the visionary behind the establishment of the United Arab Emirates. Beginning his public service as the governor of the Eastern Region in 1946, Sheikh Zayed later ascended to the leadership of Abu Dhabi in 1966, succeeding his brother Sheikh Shakhbut. Subsequently, in 1971, he assumed the mantle of the UAE's first president while maintaining his role as the ruler of Abu Dhabi until his passing in 2004. Revered as the "Father of the Nation" (Waalid al-Ummah) in the UAE, Sheikh Zayed is celebrated for his pivotal role in uniting the seven emirates. His ascension to power in Abu Dhabi occurred on August 6, 1966, following the bloodless removal of his elder brother Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan, supported by members of the ruling family and British assistance.
