Politician
Vasile Goldiș (12 November 1862 – 10 February 1934) was a Romanian politician, social theorist, and member of the Romanian Academy. He became a member of the Romanian National Party in 1893 and collaborated with the Tribuna newspaper in Sibiu. He played a significant role in advocating for political rights for Romanians in Austria-Hungary. Goldiș introduced the "new activism" approach within the party, urging more dynamic tactics for obtaining rights. In 1910, differences over negotiations with the Hungarian government led to internal divisions within the National Party. Goldiș initially aligned with the moderates but later proposed a compromise to maintain unity among Transylvanian Romanians. In 1911, he took charge of the Românul newspaper in Arad, which became a significant political voice following the closure of the Tribuna in 1912. During World War I, Goldiș refused to pledge loyalty to Hungary as requested, leading to the suspension of Românul in 1916 due to Hungarian authorities' accusations of disloyalty.
