Painter
Jean-Valentin Metzinger, a Baroque painter born in France and later becoming Austrian-Slovenian, had an Italian ancestry. Little is known about his early training, but he studied in Bologna, Venice, and Rome, likely influenced by various artists including Guido Reni, Peter Paul Rubens, and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Arriving in Ljubljana around 1727, Metzinger established himself as a professional painter, gaining commissions from Franciscans, Capuchins, and individual clients, creating numerous works in regions now part of Croatia. His marriage in 1731 and his wife's passing preceded his death in 1759 after a prolonged illness at sixty. Although he had no formal students, his paintings influenced other artists. Over 500 works have been attributed to him, primarily housed in Ljubljana, Styria, Passau, and Trieste, but some may have been executed with the help of assistants or exist in multiple versions.
