Sultan
Abdulaziz, whose Ottoman Turkish name was عبد العزيز and Turkish name was Abdülaziz, reigned as the 32nd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 25 June 1861 to 30 May 1876, until he was overthrown in a government coup. He was the son of Sultan Mahmud II and succeeded his brother Abdulmejid I in 1861. Abdulaziz was born on 8 February 1830 at Eyüp Palace in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul). Despite receiving an Ottoman education, he held a deep admiration for the progress made in the Western world. Notably, he became the first Ottoman sultan to embark on a journey to Western Europe. In the summer of 1867, he visited several significant European capitals, including Paris, London, and Vienna. Aside from his keen interest in the Ottoman Navy, which boasted the world's third-largest fleet in 1875 (after the British and French navies), the Sultan also devoted himself to documenting the Ottoman Empire. He had a passion for literature and even composed classical music. Some of his compositions, along with those of other members of the Ottoman dynasty, have been compiled in the album "European Music at the Ottoman Court" by the London Academy of Ottoman Court Music. On 30 May 1876, Abdulaziz was deposed due to allegations of mismanaging the Ottoman economy. Six days later, he was discovered dead under mysterious circumstances.
