Politician
Yoon Suk Yeol, born on 18 December 1960, is a prominent South Korean politician currently holding the position of the 13th President of South Korea since 2022. Before assuming the presidency, he notably served as the prosecutor general of South Korea from 2019 to 2021. Originating from Seoul, Yoon pursued his education at Seoul National University. During his tenure as the chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office, he played a crucial role in convicting former presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak for abuse of power. President Moon Jae-in appointed Yoon as the prosecutor general of South Korea in July 2019. Yoon's leadership saw significant investigations, particularly into influential figures like Cho Kuk, resulting in key resignations. His confrontations with the Moon administration ultimately propelled him into the presidential race. In June 2021, Yoon officially declared his candidacy for the 2022 South Korean presidential election. He aligned himself with the right-wing People Power Party (PPP) in July and secured the PPP nomination in November. Identified as conservative and economically liberal, Yoon's campaign promised economic deregulation and initiatives such as the abolition of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. On 9 March 2022, Yoon narrowly emerged victorious over Democratic Party nominee Lee Jae-myung and assumed the presidency on 10 May 2022. Throughout his presidency, Yoon has focused on endeavors such as increasing maximum working hours, diplomatic efforts to mend relations with Japan, expanding military exercises with the U.S., and adopting a tougher stance towards North Korea.
