Ruler
Stephen III, commonly known as Stephen the Great (Romanian: Ștefan cel Mare), ruled as Voivode of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504. He succeeded his father, Bogdan II, following a tumultuous period. Stephen was initially exiled but returned with the aid of Vlad III Țepeș and ascended to the throne. His reign was marked by various battles, including those against Hungary, Poland, and the Ottoman Empire. He notably won the Battle of Vaslui in 1475 and is recognized for his military prowess. Despite some losses, Stephen's rule provided stability and architectural development in Moldavia. He is regarded as a national hero by Romanians and holds a revered place in history. After his canonization by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 1992, he is honored as "Stephen the Great and Holy" (Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt).
