Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze (born 1987) is a French photographer renowned for capturing modern urban life in Hong Kong. His photographic journey began in 2012 with 'Vertical Horizon', a photo book focused on the city's vertical architecture, which garnered international attention. The book's cover features the Monster Building, a residential complex in Quarry Bay, which later appeared in the film 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' (2014) and became a popular location on social media. 'The Blue Moment' is a series of photographs taken during the "blue hour," when the sun is just below the horizon, casting a blue tint over surfaces. This series contrasts Hong Kong’s dense cityscape with the tranquility of nature, showcasing waterscapes and lush mountains surrounding the city. It was published as a photo book and exhibited for the first time in 2016. 'Concrete Stories' is a diptych of photo books released in 2018 and 2022. It documents life on Hong Kong’s rooftops, particularly in the densely populated, older districts of Kowloon. The project highlights how residents utilize these shared rooftop spaces in response to limited living space. Jacquet-Lagrèze's vertical cropping of the photos, inspired by photographer Fan Ho, emphasizes the narrowness of the urban environment. 'City Poetry' explores the old signage in Hong Kong’s oldest neighborhoods. The project involves photographing individual characters, stripping them of their original meanings, and recontextualizing them through their placement alongside other characters, creating new interpretations. 'City Poetry' was first exhibited at Blue Lotus Gallery in Hong Kong in 2019, and in 2022, it was featured in a group show at Hong Kong’s Time Square and at the Hong Kong Museum of Art as part of the *By the People* exhibition.
