Religious Leader
Pope Urban VI, originally Bartolomeo Prignano, served as the Catholic Church's leader from April 8, 1378, until his passing in October 1389. Notably, he was the last pope elected from beyond the College of Cardinals. His papacy commenced after the Avignon Papacy and faced significant division during the Western Schism, wherein much of Europe recognized Clement VII in Avignon as the legitimate pope, leading to intense conflict between rival factions.
