Architect
Matteo Lucchesi (1705–1776) emerged as a prominent Italian architect and engineer, predominantly active within his hometown of Venice. Under the tutelage of Tommaso Temanza, he acquired proficiency in mathematics and architecture. His appointment as the Magistrato delle Acque (Magistrate of Waterworks) by the Ducal Republic marked a significant role in the state. Lucchesi's notable accomplishments included the design of the reconstruction for the church of San Giovanni Nuovo (San Zaninovo), erected between 1751 and 1762. He proudly dubbed this church the "Redentore redento," signifying a "redeemed redeemer," as it rectified the discrepancies he discerned in Palladio's Il Redentore church. Regrettably, the facade of San Zaninovo remained incomplete. Lucchesi also played a part in the reconstruction efforts at the Ospedaletto and contributed to the publication of artistic methodology works. Furthermore, he served as an early mentor to his nephew, the renowned engraver Giovanni Battista Piranesi.
