Missionary
Louis-Pierre Gravel was a French Canadian missionary and colonizer known for founding the town of Gravelbourg in Saskatchewan, Canada. Born on August 8, 1868, in Stanfold (now Princeville), Quebec, he was ordained as a priest on August 28, 1892, after completing his studies at seminaries in Trois-Rivières, Nicolet, and Montreal. From 1892 to 1906, he served in parishes in New York City before being tasked with establishing a French Canadian parish in southwestern Saskatchewan. In 1906, he founded Gravelbourg with the help of five of his brothers: Henri and Maurice, both doctors; Alphonse and Emile, both lawyers; and Guy, a pharmacist, as well as his sister Laurianne, who was married to lawyer Georges Hébert. Father Gravel successfully encouraged many French Canadian Catholics to settle in the Gravelbourg, Lafleche, Mazenod, and Meyronne regions. He passed away in Montreal on February 10, 1926, and was buried in Gravelbourg.
