Politician
Justin Pierre James Trudeau, born on December 25, 1971, is a Canadian politician presently serving as Canada's 23rd prime minister since 2015 and as the leader of the Liberal Party since 2013. Trudeau is notably the second-youngest prime minister in Canadian history, succeeding Joe Clark, and is the first to be the child of a former prime minister, Pierre Trudeau. Trudeau was born in Ottawa and completed his education at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in literature from McGill University in 1994 and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia in 1998. Following his studies, he taught at the secondary school level in Vancouver before continuing his studies in Montreal in 2002. Over the years, Trudeau held various positions, including chairing the youth charity Katimavik and serving as the director of the Canadian Avalanche Association. In 2006, he became the chair of the Liberal Party's Task Force on Youth Renewal. Trudeau ventured into politics by being elected to represent the Papineau riding in the House of Commons during the 2008 federal election. He held several critic roles within the Liberal Party and eventually won the party's leadership in April 2013. In the 2015 federal election, Trudeau led the Liberals to a significant victory, securing 184 seats, marking a historic numerical increase for the party. Throughout his terms as prime minister, Trudeau spearheaded major initiatives, including the legalization of recreational marijuana through the Cannabis Act, efforts for Senate appointment reform, the establishment of a federal carbon tax, and negotiation of trade deals such as the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). He also signed significant agreements like the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Paris Agreement on climate change. However, his tenure faced ethical controversies, leading to sanctions by Canada's ethics commissioner. In subsequent elections, Trudeau's Liberals secured minority government victories in 2019 and 2021. During his later terms, he tackled the COVID-19 pandemic, responded to various crises like the 2020 Nova Scotia attacks and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, invoking the Emergencies Act and imposing sanctions on Russia.
