Ahn Jung-geun (Korean: 안중근; pronounced ), born on 2 September 1879 and passing away on 26 March 1910, was a notable Korean activist for independence and a proponent of pan-Asianism. Thomas was his baptismal name. His legacy as a martyr is honored in both South and North Korea, stemming from his pivotal act of assassinating the Japanese politician Itō Hirobumi in 1909. Itō Hirobumi had previously held positions as the Resident-General of Korea and the first Prime Minister of Japan. Following the assassination, An was apprehended, subsequently facing execution by Japanese authorities on 26 March 1910. In 1962, the South Korean government posthumously bestowed upon him the Order of Merit for National Foundation, the highest civilian honor in the Republic of Korea, in recognition of his significant contributions towards Korean independence.
