Trader
The Hon. Joseph Frobisher (1748–1810) was a prominent fur trader in Montreal, a member of the 1st Parliament of Lower Canada, and a seigneur with 57,000 acres of land. Born in Halifax, Yorkshire, he joined his brothers in Quebec after the British Conquest of New France to enter the fur trade. Together, they founded a successful fur trading company in Montreal, later partnering with Simon McTavish as part of the North West Company. Frobisher was a founding member of the Beaver Club and served as its chairman. He was also a justice of the peace, part-owner of the Batiscan Iron Works, and a major in the local militia. He retired from the fur trade in 1798.
