Politician
John Bracken (1883–1969) was a Canadian agronomist and politician who served as the 11th Premier of Manitoba (1922–1943) and later led the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada (1942–1948). Born in Ontario, Bracken moved to Manitoba, becoming president of the Manitoba Agricultural College before being unexpectedly chosen as Premier by the United Farmers of Manitoba. His administration focused on conservative fiscal policies, agriculture, and non-partisan governance. He formed coalitions with other parties and promoted provincial control over natural resources. Later, as leader of the federal Progressive Conservatives, he faced challenges due to his Western populist background and was ultimately succeeded by George Drew. Bracken retired from politics after his defeat in 1949. He died in 1969.
