Painter
Johannes of Ljubljana, also known as Janez Ljubljanski, was an active painter between 1433 and 1460. Born as the son of Frederic of Villach, Johannes became a citizen of Ljubljana around 1440. Starting in his father's Carinthian workshop, he created his earliest independent pieces. He had close ties with the Cistercians and took on commissions from Stična Abbey in Carniola. Some of his renowned frescoes include those in the Gothic Saint Nicholas's Church in Visoko (1443) and in Muljava (1456). A dated work from 1459 is located in Saint Peter's Church in Kamni Vrh pri Ambrusu. Johannes' independent creations span paintings in the Stična monastery and churches in Metnaj and Mačkovec pri Dvoru. Collaborating with his workshop artists, he contributed to works in Troščine and Saint Nicholas's Chapel of Ease in Žužemberk. The frescoes in Mengeš and the Annunciation pilgrimage church in Crngrob, where he painted Holy Sunday around 1460, are also attributed to his workshop. Johannes introduced a late soft painting style to Carniola from Carinthia, influenced by Bohemian and Italian art. His workshop's works showcased colorful, sculpted figures in an idealized calmness. While adapting to Carniolan chancel painting styles, his iconography demonstrated a unique blend of influences.
