Historian Polymath
Johann Weikhard Freiherr von Valvasor, also known as Johann Weichard Freiherr von Valvasor or simply Valvasor, was a natural historian and polymath born in Carniola, present-day Slovenia. Baptized on May 28, 1641, he was a fellow of the Royal Society in London. Valvasor is renowned as a pioneer in the study of karst topography. His most famous work, the 1689 "Glory of the Duchy of Carniola," published in 15 books across four volumes, was a significant source for older Slovenian history until the late 19th century. This established him as one of the precursors of modern Slovenian historiography.
