Military Leader
Jean-Baptiste Kléber lived from March 9, 1753, to June 14, 1800, and was a prominent French military figure during the French Revolutionary Wars. Initially serving in the French Royal Army for a year, his social background limited his career prospects. He later joined the French Revolutionary Army in 1792 and swiftly ascended in rank. Kléber participated in various military campaigns, including the Rhineland conflict and the suppression of the Vendée Revolt. Following a period of civilian life post the Treaty of Campo Formio, he rejoined the military to join Napoleon Bonaparte in the Egyptian and Syrian campaign of 1798. When Napoleon left Egypt in 1799, Kléber was entrusted with leadership over all French forces in Egypt. Tragically, he was assassinated in Cairo by a student in 1800. Aside from his military career, Kléber possessed architectural skills and contributed to designing several buildings during times of peace.
