Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (5 March 1696 – 27 March 1770), also known as Giambattista Tiepolo, was a renowned Italian painter and printmaker hailing from the Republic of Venice. He was celebrated for his contributions to the Rococo style and is regarded as a significant figure within the 18th-century Venetian school of painting. Tiepolo's artistic prowess extended beyond Italy, as he also undertook commissions in Germany and Spain. Alongside prominent contemporaries such as Giambattista Pittoni, Canaletto, Giovan Battista Piazzetta, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, and Francesco Guardi, Tiepolo is considered one of the traditional Old Masters of his era. Recognized for his exceptional talent and craftsmanship, Tiepolo earned early success in his career and has been hailed by art historian Michael Levey as "the greatest decorative painter of eighteenth-century Europe, as well as its most able craftsman.
