Politician
George Hedley Vicars Bulyea (February 17, 1859 – July 22, 1928) was a Canadian politician who served as the first Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Appointed on September 1, 1905, he was the youngest person ever to hold the position at age 46, chosen by Governor General Earl Grey on the advice of Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Bulyea was involved in the early governance of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in 1894 and re-elected in subsequent years. He played a key role in the transition from territorial to provincial status for Alberta and Saskatchewan and served as Commissioner of Agriculture and Territorial Secretary. As Lieutenant Governor, Bulyea was notable for his decisive action during the Alberta and Great Waterways Railway scandal, where he appointed Arthur Sifton as Premier to resolve the crisis. His role was initially more politically active but later became more ceremonial. He served two terms as Lieutenant Governor until October 20, 1915, and subsequently chaired Alberta's Board of Public Utilities. He received honorary degrees from the University of Alberta and the University of New Brunswick and was a member of local clubs in Edmonton.
