Eugenio Coșeriu (July 27, 1921 – September 7, 2002) was a linguist specializing in Romance languages at the University of Tübingen. He authored over 50 books and held the esteemed title of honorary member of the Romanian Academy. Born on July 27, 1921, in Mihăileni, a small Romanian town now situated in the Republic of Moldova, Coșeriu completed his high school education in Bălți, where he was classmates with Vadim Pirogan and Sergiu Grossu. After studying at the University of Iași, he received a scholarship from the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in 1940, allowing him to continue his studies at Sapienza University of Rome. In 1944, he earned his PhD under the guidance of Giovanni Maver, focusing on the influence of the Chanson de geste on the folk poetry of the South Slavic peoples. Coșeriu spent time at the University of Padua in 1944–1945 and the University of Milan from 1945 to 1949, where he obtained a PhD in philosophy under Antonio Banfi's supervision. From 1950 to 1958, Coșeriu served as a Professor of General and Indo-European Linguistics at the University of the Republic in Uruguay. He held visiting positions at the University of Málaga and the University of Navarra, and a teaching role at the University of Coimbra. Invited as a professor at the University of Bonn and the University of Frankfurt from 1961 to 1963, he later settled permanently at the University of Tübingen. There, he held the position of Professor of Romance Linguistics until his retirement in 1991, after which he was elected an honorary member of the Romanian Academy in 1991.
