Erasmus of Lueg, also known as Erasmus von Lueg in German and Erazem Predjamski in Slovene, served as the burgrave of Predjama Castle during the 15th century and gained notoriety as a prominent robber baron. He was born as the son of Nikolaj Lueger, the Imperial Governor of Trieste. Legend has it that in 1483, Erasmus fatally injured Marshall Pappenheim during an altercation at the Vienna Court, provoked by Pappenheim's disrespect toward Erasmus's deceased friend, Andreas Baumkircher of Vipava. Fleeing the consequences of this act, Erasmus sought refuge in his castle, Predjama. From there, he formed an alliance with Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus and initiated attacks on Habsburg properties in Carniola. In response, Emperor Frederick III dispatched Gaspar Ravbar, the governor of Trieste, to besiege Predjama Castle. Despite Ravbar's efforts to starve Erasmus into submission, Erasmus managed to sustain himself by receiving supplies through a secret tunnel network beneath the castle. Erasmus met his demise after enduring a prolonged siege. According to popular lore, he was allegedly betrayed by one of his associates and met his end within the confines of his room or garderobe, struck down by a cannon or catapult shot.
