King
Carol II (15 October 1893 - 4 April 1953) was the King of Romania from 1930 to 1940. He succeeded his grand-uncle, King Carol I, and was the first Hohenzollern king born in Romania. Known for controversy and a lack of responsibility, Carol deserted the army during World War I and faced challenges regarding his marriage to Zizi Lambrino. After divorcing Lambrino, he married Princess Helen of Greece and Denmark but had affairs with Elena Lupescu. Carol renounced his succession rights, but later returned to Romania in 1930, dethroning his own son, Prince Michael. His reign was marked by the Great Depression and political instability, leading to a royal dictatorship in 1938. During World War II, Carol pursued alliances and neutrality, but Romania lost significant territories. He was forced to abdicate and was succeeded by his son, Michael. Carol II made an unsuccessful attempt to regain power after the war and died in exile, having married Elena Lupescu.
