Architect
Adrian D. Smith, an American architect born in 1944, is renowned for designing iconic structures such as the Burj Khalifa and the Jeddah Tower. He founded his firm, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, in 2006. Smith's career began at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in Chicago, where he later became a Design Partner. He holds an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Texas A&M University. Smith's architectural contributions include the petal shape of the Burj Khalifa, inspired by the Spider Lily flower, which enhances the building's stability against wind effects. He is also credited with introducing innovative designs like the first large-scale commercial passive double-wall structure in the United States. Smith's projects have received numerous awards, and he was honored with the CTBUH 2011 Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award.
