Company Railway Operator
The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) (French: Chemin de fer Canadien Pacifique) was incorporated in 1881 and is one of Canada's Class I railways. The railway, known simply as CPR or Canadian Pacific, was previously named CP Rail from 1968 to 1996. It is currently owned by Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited, which took over operations in 2001 following a corporate restructuring. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, CPR owned about 20,100 kilometers (12,500 miles) of track in 2023, extending across seven Canadian provinces and into the United States. Its network runs from Montreal to Vancouver and reaches as far north as Edmonton. In the U.S., it serves cities like Minneapolis-St. Paul, Milwaukee, Detroit, Chicago, and Albany, New York. The railway was built between eastern Canada and British Columbia from 1881 to 1885, connecting with earlier lines in the Ottawa Valley and Georgian Bay areas. It was Canada's first transcontinental railway and played a key role in the settlement and development of Western Canada. For decades, CPR was the primary means of long-distance passenger transport in most parts of Canada and was one of the largest and most influential companies in the country until 1975. In 2009, CPR expanded into the U.S. by acquiring the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad (DM&E) and the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad (IC&E). These lines extended through North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas City, Missouri, and Chicago, Illinois. CPR also owns the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad and Conrail Shared Assets Operations, with historical ties to the Soo Line and Milwaukee Road. CPR is publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker CP. Its U.S. headquarters are in Minneapolis. As of March 30, 2023, TCI Fund Management Limited, a London-based hedge fund, was the largest shareholder, owning 6% of the company. In December 2021, CPR purchased the Kansas City Southern Railway for US$31 billion. On April 14, 2023, Kansas City Southern became a wholly owned subsidiary of CPR, and the company, along with its subsidiaries, began operating under the name Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC).
