Militant Organization Terrorist Group
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) is a Baloch ethnonationalist militant group based in Afghanistan, known for its violent activities in Pakistan's Balochistan province. Founded in 2000, the BLA emerged from earlier Baloch insurgencies and has carried out numerous attacks against Pakistani security forces, civilians, and foreign nationals. It is designated as a terrorist organization by Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The BLA’s activities intensified in 2004 when it began a violent campaign for Balochistan's independence, targeting non-Baloch minorities and infrastructure. Notable incidents include attacks on schools, Chinese nationals, and Punjabi residents. In 2022, the BLA claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at the University of Karachi, marking its first female suicide bomber. The group has also faced military strikes from Pakistan and has been involved in regional tensions, with allegations of its funding sources including potential support from India. The BLA's leader since 2007, Hyrbyair Marri, has been controversial, with conflicting reports about his involvement with the group.
