Data Points

Paldalsan Mountain is Suwon's most representative mountain and is located in the central part of the city. The mountain was originally called Tapsan (Pagoda Mountain), because its shape resembles the pagoda that is to the south of Gwanggyosan Mountain. The origin of its new name Paldalsan is related to Yi Go, who was a scholar during the end of the Goryeo Dynasty. After resigning from his official post, Yi Go settled at the foot of this mountain. King Gongtang of Goryeo dispatched a messenger to find out how he was doing, and Yi Go said, 'Tapsan offers a beautiful landscape, and the summit of the mountain commands a complete scenic view, as the mountain is satong paldal (literally 'to open to the four directions and reach to the eight directions')'. Two years after the foundation of the new Joseon Dynasty, King Taejo granted Yi Go a governmental post but he refused to leave the mountain. The King became curious about the mountain where Yi was residing, and sent a painter to do a landscape painting of Tapsan Mountain. As soon as he saw the painting of the mountain, he was fascinated by the mountain's scenic beauty as well and the mountain was eventually named Paldalsan (literally, 'mountain that teaches to the eight directions'). Paldalmun, which is the South Gate of Hwaseong Fortress, was named after this mountain, Yi Go was a well-known devoted son. He taught the village residents to be generous and kind to other people, and the local people did a good job of carrying out his principles. The village was named Gwonseon-dong, which literally means 'a village of recommending goodness'.
