The construction of the Bank of Albania building began in 1937 and it was completed in 1938 with an opening ceremony held on 30 October, 1938. In those days the building was known as the National Bank of Albania. It is the work of one of the most important Italian architects of that time, Professor Vittorio Ballio Mopurgo, one of Benito Mussolini’s favorites. Located in the center of Tirana, on the western side of Skanderbeg Square, the Bank of Albania building’s configuration was designed to be in harmony with the reconstruction plans for the city of Tirana. The Italian city planners and architects, Florestano di Fausto, Armando Brasini and Gherardio Bosio were the masterminds of the rebirth of Tirana. The building is considered one of Tirana's most valuable architectural and urbanistic constructions. The document is a valuable source to:- Analyze the history of the construction of the Bank of Albania building - Analyze the architectural details of the facade Discover what it is inside the main hall that you access after crossing the 6m tall porticoDescription of the hallways of the Bank of Albania building- Description of the Bank of Albania building's courtyardView pictures of all of the above mentioned details and have a professional idea of this outstanding architectural masterpiece of Albania's capital.

The work for the construction of the St. Nicholas Church in Rus Katolik started in 1932 and lasted six years. The church was consecrated on October 30th 1938 by the Archbishop of  Shkodër, Msgr. Gaspër Thaçi in the presence of Father Gjergj Fishta, the parish priest of the time and a crowd of laymen from the area around. The community had expressed the wish to have a church in their quarter long before. The construction ground was donated by Zoga of Mati Gjeka exactly for that purpose in 1878. The funds for the project we almost entirely raised by the Archbishop of Shkodër, Msgr. Lazër Mjeda and his successor Msgr. Gaspër Thaçi. Two celebrated priests and in the same time national poets, were the architects of the church. After the death of Father Ndre Mjeda, Father Gjergj Fishta took over. The later was recognized as the official architect of the Archdiocese of Shkoder-Pult. The church preserves the style of the Italian Renaissance beautifully intertwined with elements of the Hellenic architecture which manifest themselves in the exterior and the inner premises. The windows and the finely carved arches of the frames are reminiscent of the work of Michelangelo in the Chapel of the Medici or the Farnese Palace in Rome. Father Gjergj Fishta concerned himself even with the decoration of the church. Kolë Idromeno supervised the technical aspect of the construction work. He is also credited with conceiving the layout for the belfry. The community contributed with financial donations and voluntary work. The story of the destruction of the church during the communist regime has some interesting peculiarities. As manual strength was not sufficient to bring it down, they used tanks to weaken the robust stony pillars. During the communist dictatorship, the gym of the grade school 'Pashko Vasa' was built where the church used to be. On September 15th 1995, a group believers led by Father Ndoc Nogaj, had a meeting with Mr. Nikolin Leka, the director of the school, and informed him on the will of the Church and of the people to rebuilt the St. Nicholas Church. The director welcomed the request and appointed the teacher of the physical education to assist the labourers to remove the gym appliances that had been fastened in the cement floor. On the following Sunday, Father Ndoc Noga celebrated the first mass after the year 1997, with the participation of a great number of believers. One day later, excavation work started in order to unearth th efoundations of the old chuch. As soon as the word for the beginning of the work spread out, people rushed to offer their help. In less than two days, the old foundations were fully uncovered. A concrete platform was cast over the foundations. On the platform a wooden building coated in tin was built. It would serve as a church until 2008. Father Dom Ndoc started to celebrate the Holy Mass there each Sunday. The faithful would gather in huge numbers to attend service. Step by step, the scope of activities in the church started to expand with the organization of catechism classes, the service of the ministrants in the altar, the choir and some initiatives with the youth. In 2000, the Franciscan Sisters and the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart came to the aid of Father Ndoc Noga. The sisters were entrusted with the decoration, liturgical animation, the choir, catechism and preparation for the first communion and confirmation and maintenance services. On December 2001, Msgr. Angelo Massafra honoured the faithful in the Church of St. Nicholas by celebrating the Holy Mass on the St. Nicholas Day. From then on, this was turned into a tradition. On that occasion, Archbishop Massafra promised that the church of St. Nicholas would be rebuilt. On April 24th 2003, the Cardinal Ivan Diaz, in the capacity of the Apostolic Nuncio in Albania and Prefect of the Propaganda Fide, laid and blessed the first stone of the new church. The work for the reconstruction of the St. Nicholas Church started immediately under the special care of the Archbishop. The project took five years full of intense work and challenges. With a lot of patience and faith in the Providence Divine, it was possible to secure the support of different donors and persons of good will such as: The Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples; Renovabis; Kirche in Not; Mission Pro Europa of Austria; Ambassador Silvano Pedrollo and his associate Dr. Miguel Salvatore Porcaro; Mr. Kolë Cacaj and the Albanian Diaspora in New York. In the meantime, the pastoral activity with the Holy Eucharist on Sundays and catechism classes was going on regularly under the guidance of Father Ndoc Noga and the Sisters. The elderly priest was compelled to withdraw in 2007 due to his poor health. The Archbishop entrusted the church to the English missionary Father Martin Thompson, professor of liturgy in the Seminary of Shkodër. As the construction of the mighty church moved on, the Christian community continued to grow around the Eucharist. The new Church of St. Nicholas was consecrated on November 29th 2008 by the Cardianl Salvatore de Giorgi, Archbishop Emeritus of Palermo, Italy. The church is still short of the belfry.
