On December 27, 2023, at Abganerovo village's railway station in the Volgograd region, a memorial stone honoring the deportation and oppression endured by the Kalmyks people from 1943 to 1957 was shattered. It was installed on December 25, 2023. Batu Khasikov, the leader of Kalmykia, condemned the act as a 'senseless provocation' and urged severe punishment for those responsible. Security forces are presently investigating the scene. Authorities from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Investigative Committee, the prosecutor's office, the Svetloyarsky district administration, and the Volgograd regional government have yet to comment on the situation. As reported by local media during the unveiling ceremony, the memorial plaque at Abganerovo station highlighted that in 1943, it served as 'the gathering point, loading site onto trains, and the starting point for the forced and indefinite deportation of the Kalmyk people from the Maloderbetovsky, Sarpinsky, and Ketchenerovsky districts of the republic' to Siberia. The individuals responsible for these repressions were not identified. The large-scale deportation of Kalmyks to Siberia was carried out on December 28-29, 1943, under Joseph Stalin's orders. Since 2004, the republic has commemorated the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Kalmyk People's Deportation. Recently, Batu Khasikov signed a decree for a one-time payment of 10,000 rubles in honor of the 80th anniversary of the deportation. This payment is designated for residents of the republic who suffered from Stalinist repressions.
