The biggest spring of Värska has been called the Vision Spring or the Holy Spring. It was believed that the waters of the spring could cure bad eyesight. The water is very clean and you may happily drink it. Many people in Värska still use it as their everyday drinking water. The spring and promenade were blessed by the local priest Father Andreas in July 2020. However, it is little known that the history of bottle water production has started from here, the Vision Spring. The local pharmacist Peeter Mikhein realized the value of the spring water already in 1936, when he started bottling the water and sold the bottles in his pharmacy. His ad from August 14, 1936 let people know that his mineral water factory produced Värska Drink, soda water made from the Värska spring water, Seltzer mineral water and lemon soda water. The same year, in 1936, there was a big campaign to identify and map springs all over Estonia. As a result of the study, 15 springs were registered along the coast of the Värska Bay in about a mile-long section. About half of these were Artesian springs, providing over 3000 liters of water in an hour. The analysis proved that the water of these springs was very clean and rich in minerals. The water of the Holy Spring has been used in the Värska church during the Epiphany, when the Eastern Christians commemorate the baptism of 30-years-old Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God. The holiday is celebrated in Setomaa on January 19th (according to the old calendar). On that day, the local people bring the blessed water home from the church, to cure cattle as well as people. It is believed that the water would stay fresh until the next Epiphany.
