The Geo Milev Drama Theatre, named after the esteemed poet Geo Milev, holds significant cultural importance as a spiritual center in Stara Zagora. With a history spanning over 150 years, the theatre has been a prominent institution in the city since its first performance on April 18, 1870. Notably, the theatre's origins are intertwined with the local revolutionary committee formed by Vasil Levski, as the first actors in Stara Zagora were members of this committee. In 1916, Geo Milev, a renowned poet and playwright, staged notable plays such as 'Oedipus Rex' by Sophocles and 'The Government Inspector' by Gogol. The theatre became a professional establishment in the 1919/1920 season and celebrated its centennial anniversary on December 12, 2019. The Old Theatre building, designed by architect Nikola Lazarov in the Viennese Baroque style, stands as an iconic structure in the city.
