The received historical sources attest the location of  Shkodër's Cathedral within the Rozafa Castle until 1478 - the year of the Ottoman Turkish invasion of the fortified city - after which the Cathedral was turned into a mosque. The humanist priest Marin Barleti, in his chronicle of the events between 1474 and 1479 (work published on 10.01.1504), wrote that St. Stephen was the Patron of the city, a title that Cathedral has retained in Her forced wanderings because of Turkish invaders. As an example, there is the ancient church of St Stephan in Barbullush, entirely demolished by the earthquake of June 1st 1905. During the centuries of the Turkish occupation, the bishops of Shkoder were foreced to live outside the city. The first bishop who settled back in Shkoder was Mgr. Pal Pjetër Kamsi in 1742, who enjoyed the support of his powerful relatives. The faithful of Shkoder demanded to rebuilt the Cathedral in their city. The request was forwarded to the Sultan in Istanbul for permission, which was granted by a decree of 1851. April 7th, 1858: Blessing of the foundation stone of the new Cathedral of Shkoder. 1912-1913: The Montenegrin army bombards the city targeting and damaging also the Cathedral. 1967: During the notorious 'cultural revolution' the Cathedral was transformed into the Sports Hall. March 7th, 1991: The Cathedral is reopened by Dom Zef Simoni and Fr. Aleks Baqliofm. 1993: The renovation was completed. The statue of St. Michael the Archangel, by Kolë Idromeno, was put back to its place along with and one of two marble holy water fonts confiscated by the communists.  April 25th, 1993: St. John Paul II, in the presence of Mother Therese of Calcutta, celebrated the Holy Mass and consecrated the first four bishops.January 12th, 2008: Consecration of the Cathedral by Cardinal Franz Rode. Some particularities of the Cathedral of St. Stephen. At the time of its construction it was the largest church in the Balkans; for this reason it was called 'Kisha e Madhe', 'The Great Church'. The ceiling of the church is entirely in polychrome wood by the local architect Kole Idromeno. The bell tower, destroyed by the communists and rebuilt in 1999, measures 45 meters. The Cathedral houses the mortal remains of 3 of the 38 Martyrs of 20th century in Albania, beatified on November 5, 2016. Again in 2016, the square and the gardens of the Cathedral received a new shape.
