Dob is a suburban settlement with approximately 1,600 residents, situated in the Municipality of Domžale. The local football club, NK Dob, plays in the Dob Sports Park and competes in the second tier of Slovenian football. The name 'Dob' originates from the word dób, which evolved from the Slavic word dǫbъ, meaning 'oak' (specifically, a type of oak). Many local place names derive from the collective dǫbъje, also meaning 'oak' (e.g., Dobje, Dobeno, Dobindol, Hrastnik). A 1359 document refers to the settlement as Dub. The name reveals that an oak forest existed in the area at the time of settlement, indicating that Dob was established in an earlier period of habitation.Dob was first mentioned on April 7, 1220, when a nobleman, John of Dob (Johannes de Aich), acted as a witness in a contract concerning Turjak. Three years later, on January 25, 1223, William of Dob (Willehelmus de Eicho) is also recorded. By 1296, the village is mentioned twice, and in that year, the nobleman from Hmeljnik exchanged six farms in Dob with the monastery in Stisk. The independent parish of Dob was first noted in that year and again in 1323. Jakob of Dob, one of the co-founders of the Mekinje monastery, is mentioned in a document from October 9, 1300. Several members of the Dob knightly family are referenced in historical sources, including Volbenk of Dob (Volkerus de Aich) in 1320, Hengel of Dob in 1332, and Erhard and Zofia of Dob in 1361. On September 10, 1403, a nobleman from Kamnik sold property in Dob's parish to the confraternity of Mary. A document from September 12, 1455, records Wofang Mangspurg granting a tithe from seven farms in Dob to Ahac Petschacher, a 'burgher of Stain.' Another document dated January 24, 1463, mentions Magdalena, the widow of Jurij Ravbar, as the owner of six farms in Dob.The well-known Škocjan register, dated November 24, 1587, which outlines contributions by serfs toward the construction of the Karlovac fortress, lists two individuals from Dob: Gašper Majhen, who gave 4 krajcars, and Martin Nakrst, who contributed 12.Dob is a large village located on a plain at the confluence of the Rača, Radomlje, Rovščica (Jermance), and Potok pod Močilnik rivers. It developed from an original farming settlement near the church, away from the former Roman road. The village's core formed along Potok and an older road, which was likely once a significant transport route. W. Schmid even speculated that the Roman road passed through Dob's old village center. The newest part of the settlement extends along the current main road.
