The Joint Security Area (JSA), also known as the Truce Village or Panmunjom, is the only place within the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where North and South Korean forces stand face-to-face. The JSA serves as a venue for diplomatic meetings between the two Koreas and was previously the site of military negotiations between North Korea and the United Nations Command (UNC) until March 1991. Since its establishment in 1953, the JSA has witnessed numerous significant events and incidents, starting with the repatriation of prisoners of war (POWs) across the Bridge of No Return after the cessation of hostilities. In 2018, North and South Korean officials agreed to remove all landmines, weapons, and guard posts from the JSA. This process was completed on October 25, 2018, leaving only 35 unarmed security guards in the area. It was also decided that the JSA would primarily function as a tourist attraction moving forward. On November 6, 2018, the UNC announced that it would transfer the primary guard duties of the now demilitarized Joint Security Area to both North and South Korea. The Joint Security Area (JSA) is situated about 800 meters south of the original village of Panmunjom, a location often used interchangeably with the JSA due to its close proximity. The village was mostly agricultural and was destroyed during the Korean War, leaving only the building now known as the North Korea Peace Museum, where the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed. The JSA is administered by the United Nations Command (UNC). Established as part of the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement, the JSA serves as a neutral area where representatives from the UNC and the Korean People's Army/Chinese People's Volunteers (KPA/CPV) meet to supervise the truce. The JSA is an 800-meter-wide enclave bisected by the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), allowing free movement within its boundaries by both sides. Over time, the JSA has undergone significant changes, with the removal of some buildings, the construction of new ones, and the enforcement of the MDL within the area following the 1976 murders of two American officers. This enforcement marked the end of the JSA's status as a fully neutral zone, restricting movement and leading to the rebuilding and renaming of several UNC checkpoints. For example, what was formerly Observation Post No. 5 is now Checkpoint #3, while the original Checkpoint #3, known as 'The Loneliest Outpost in the World,' was at the southern end of the Bridge of No Return. The North Korean side also built the '72-Hour Bridge' after losing road access to the JSA following these changes.
