In order to replace the building of the German Theatre destroyed in the fire of 1902, the German community of Tallinn (ca 1200 people) organized an international architectural competition for commissioning a new design of the theatre building. The work by architects from Saint Petersburg, Nikolai Vasiliev and Alexey Bubor, which won the 1st place among the 61 works submitted, was based on the formal expressions of the Nordic Modern features of the Art Nouveau style, and on the idea of designing from inside out. The theatre building that was opened for the public on October 4th 1910, featured a 640 seats theatre hall with double galleries (currently 530 seats), a vestibule and a foyer. The cloakrooms were situated next to the walkways. The building also had dressing rooms for 24 actors, storage and stage work premises and a restaurant. The individual parts of the lively partitioned building also reveal themselves in sharp and powerful exterior shapes, successfully combining the limestone typical of Tallinn with plastered surfaces and a laconic ornament band. The most important feature resulting from subsequent annexies is the loft hall with 130 seats.
