In Burkina Faso's north-western town of Nouna, the bodies of 28 individuals shot dead were discovered. A civil society group attributes the killings to armed civilians posing as members of a government-supported volunteer force fighting jihadists. The government is conducting an investigation into the matter. Burkina Faso has been grappling with a decade-long insurgency, displacing nearly two million people. Despite a military takeover last January promising to quell attacks, violence persists. The government condemned the violence, urging calm during the investigation. The incident coincided with the government's mobilization for unity against terrorism. They have enlisted civilians into the Homeland Defence Volunteers (VDP) to combat militant Islamists. However, a civil society group claimed the killings were carried out by armed civilians masquerading as VDP members in retaliation for a suspected militant attack, although this claim lacks independent confirmation.
