The Ohel Leah Synagogue is a Modern Orthodox Jewish synagogue located at the intersection of Robinson Road and Castle Road in the Mid-Levels area of Hong Kong Island. Established in 1902, it has served as a central hub for Jewish social and religious life in Hong Kong.Originally catering to a community of Baghdadi Sephardic Jews, the synagogue operated under the supervision of the Haham of the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation of London. Today, it is an independent congregation with members from across the global Jewish diaspora. The synagogue, a striking example of British Colonial Edwardian architecture, stands amidst Hong Kong’s towering skyscrapers. Designed by architects Leigh & Orange, it was constructed between 1901 and 1902. The whitewashed, multi-turreted, two-story structure underwent a $6 million restoration in 1998, returning it to its original splendor. The name 'Ohel Leah' honors Leah Sassoon, mother of the Sassoon brothers—Jacob, Edward, and Meyer—who donated the land for the synagogue. The Sassoons were among the earliest Sephardic merchants from India to settle in Hong Kong in the late 19th century. In addition to Ohel Leah, Hong Kong is home to other Jewish congregations: the Sephardic congregation, primarily comprised of Israeli expatriates; Chabad Lubavitch; and the United Jewish Congregation, which aligns with Reform and Conservative Judaism. Many local Jews hold memberships in multiple congregations.Declared a Grade I historic building in 1987, Ohel Leah was briefly at risk of demolition. To safeguard its future, the Hong Kong Antiquities Authority designated it a proposed monument, leading to a preservation agreement between the government and its owners. It was reinstated as a Grade I historic building in 1990.In 1998, the synagogue’s renovation received international acclaim, earning the Outstanding Project Award at the 2000 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Ohel Leah continues to stand as a testament to the enduring legacy of Hong Kong’s Jewish community.

In 1907, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) tracks were laid through the district, and by 1908, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad had arrived. The settlement of Biggar, named after W. H. Biggar, general counsel for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTPR), was incorporated as a village in 1909. In 1910, the GTPR established a divisional point in Biggar, leading to a construction boom that pushed the population past 600. Biggar became a home terminal where train crews changed, and its station, one of the largest in the west, featured a 24-hour restaurant. In 1911, Biggar was incorporated as a town.Development continued, and by the early 1920s, the population exceeded 2,000. Over the next 30 years, the population remained stable, but Biggar saw renewed growth in the 1950s.Today, Biggar remains a divisional point for the Canadian National Railway (CNR), employing about 190 people. The railway contributes approximately $12.3 million annually in payroll to the community. With a current population of 2,161, Biggar is a thriving and prosperous town with much to offer visitors and residents alike.Biggar is known for several notable symbols. One of the most famous is Milo Hanson and the Hanson Buck, a world-record white-tailed deer shot on November 23, 1993. The Hanson Buck holds an official Boone and Crockett score of 213 1/8. Another symbol is Sandra Schmirler, a three-time world curling champion and the 1998 Olympic gold medalist. Schmirler grew up in Biggar and was active in curling, including winning the 1981 provincial girls high school championship. She went on to claim world titles in 1993, 1994, and 1997, with her Olympic gold medal in Nagano marking the pinnacle of her career. The Sandra Schmirler Olympic Gold Park, officially opened on August 6, 2000, honors her legacy. It surrounds Biggar Central School 2000 and features a gazebo, soccer field, playground, a Memorial Wall, and a Wall of Fame.Biggar is also famous for its slogan, 'New York is Big, but This is Biggar.' According to local legend, the slogan was created in 1909 by a survey crew who, after a night of drinking, wrote the phrase on a sign as a prank. The townspeople embraced it, and today, the slogan and sign are among Biggar’s most recognizable and celebrated symbols worldwide.

Nokomis is a town located in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The area's history began with homesteading opportunities opening in 1904. In 1906, Florence Mary Halstead established a post office on her farm and named it 'Nokomis.' Following the construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, the town requested that the post office be moved into town, which was granted under the condition that the town be renamed Nokomis. Initially located in Henry's Men's Clothing Store, the post office moved to its own building just north of the Times Office the following year.In 1907, the town was named Junction City in hopes of becoming a major urban center in western Canada. That year saw the establishment of the Canadian Bank of Commerce and the Northern Crown Bank, with early residential construction including homes for Norman Townsend and J.I. Jamieson. Ewart's Hall, located above the Northern Crown Bank, hosted the first schoolroom classes with Mabel Dobbyn, who later married K.W. Reikie of the Bank of Commerce, as the first teacher.By 1908, the town had begun to grow with the arrival of lumber, hardware, and carpenters, and plans for a brickyard were considered. The Nokomis Times building was erected on 2nd Avenue by W.C.R. Garrioch. The town was officially renamed Nokomis in the same year. The post office was officially opened in 1909.In 1910, the Carter Land Company began acquiring land in the district. The discovery of a coal seam southeast of Nokomis in 1912 led to the start of two additional mines between 1914 and 1916. By 1918, Hunter Valley Coal Chain (HVCC) had acquired surface and mineral rights to 5,000 acres in the area.Following World War II, returning veterans found work with a new American oil company, ND Oil Seekers. In 1947, the first oil well, known as NOW1, was drilled in the Hatfield Basin, which was known for its sweet crude oil and shallow depth. This discovery made the area attractive to new oil companies. In 1988, the first horizontal well was drilled, setting several records for speed, length, and production. In 1998, the Saskatchewan Provincial Rifle Association purchased land east of Nokomis to reopen an abandoned rifle range, now known as North Star Range, where long-range target shooting is practiced. As of the 2001 census, Nokomis had a population of 436, with a density of 167.3 people per square kilometer.

Camp Bonifas is a United Nations Command military post situated 400 meters (1,300 feet) south of the southern boundary of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and 2,400 meters (7,900 feet) south of the Military Demarcation Line, which marks the border between South Korea (the Republic of Korea) and North Korea (the Democratic People's Republic of Korea). It was returned to the Republic of Korea in 2006. The camp hosts the United Nations Command Security Battalion-Joint Security Area (JSA), which has the primary mission of monitoring and enforcing the Korean Armistice Agreement of 1953 between North and South Korea. Soldiers from the Republic of Korea and United States Forces Korea, known as 'security escorts,' conduct the United Nations Command DMZ Orientation Program tours of the JSA and surrounding areas. Additionally, the camp features a gift shop that sells DMZ- and JSA-related souvenirs. Originally named Camp Kitty Hawk, the camp was renamed on August 18, 1986, in honor of U.S. Army Captain Arthur G. Bonifas (posthumously promoted to major) and First Lieutenant Mark T. Barrett (posthumously promoted to captain), who were killed by North Korean soldiers in the 'Korean axe murder incident.' Access to the Neutral Nations Monitors from Sweden and Switzerland, based at Camp Swiss-Swede, was through Camp Bonifas. The camp also features a unique par-3, one-hole golf course with an AstroTurf green, surrounded on three sides by minefields. Sports Illustrated has called it 'the most dangerous hole in golf,' and there are reports of at least one shot detonating a land mine. In 1998, Kevin Sullivan of The Washington Post described Camp Bonifas as a 'small collection of buildings surrounded by triple coils of razor wire just 440 yards south of the DMZ,' which, if not for the minefields and soldiers, would 'look like a big Boy Scout camp.'.

The Korean Central History Museum, situated in Pyongyang, North Korea, stands as a repository of Korean history, spanning from primitive society to the modern era. Originally established by Kim Il Sung on December 1, 1945, atop Moran Hill, the museum faced adversity during the Korean War, with many collections hidden and its original building destroyed by US troops. However, resilience prevailed, and the museum was rebuilt on Kim Il-sung Square in either 1960 or 1977. In 1998, it was honored with a series of commemorative postage stamps. In a 2014 speech, Kim Jong Un expressed his vision of elevating the museum to a global standard for history museums. Today, the Korean Central History Museum boasts 10,500 square meters of exhibition space across 19 rooms, housing approximately 100,000 relics and artifacts. Despite its historical significance, photography inside the museum is prohibited. Among its notable collections are one-million-year-old bones excavated from Komun Moru in 1966 and a replica of the world's first rocket battery. Open to foreigners and tourists, the museum stands as a testament to North Korea's rich cultural heritage and historical narrative.

Tempos Vega Sicilia is a Spanish winery situated in the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen within the Province of Valladolid, Castile and León (northern Spain). Established in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, it began with the planting of various grapes sourced from the Bordeaux wine region of France, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which remain integral to their wines today. Since 1982, coinciding with the Ribera del Duero being granted Denominación de Origen (DO) status, the Álvarez family, esteemed members of the Primum Familiae Vini, have owned Tempos Vega Sicilia. When comparing Spanish wines to Bordeaux's esteemed First Growth wines, wine connoisseur Hugh Johnson likened Vega Sicilia to Latour. However, he noted it's akin to a Latour vintage that has ripened the grapes extensively and put the picking crews under significant heat—a nod to the notably warmer climate and unique growing conditions in the Ribera del Duero. Tempos Vega Sicilia's wines enjoy global acclaim as some of the most exceptional and highly prized red wines available. Their premier wine typically sells for an average price of $497 per bottle, establishing a reputation for excellence and value in the market.Vega Sicilia, established by Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, a Spanish winemaker trained in Bordeaux, gained prominence in the 20th century as one of Spain's premier wines. Over its history, notable winemakers like Mariano García contributed to its legacy. The origin of the name 'Vega Sicilia' remains uncertain but holds no connection to Sicilian wines, referencing the greenery along the Duero riverbank and Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians. The vineyards initially planted with Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, unique for Ribera del Duero, still encompass nearly 40% of Vega Sicilia's estate, focusing on old vines with low yields, some over a century old. Known for its patience in winemaking, Vega Sicilia ages its wines for extended periods, releasing them when they reach desired styles. The estate produces three main wines: 1. Unico: A Gran Reserva released about a decade after vintage, primarily Tempranillo with Cabernet Sauvignon, though not produced in poor vintages. 2. Valbuena 5°: Aged for five years prior to release, predominantly Tempranillo with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. 3. Vega Sicilia Unico Reserva Especial: A non-vintage blend aged for at least 10 years, combining grapes from different Unico vintages. Previously, Valbuena 3° was produced until 1998, and Alión and Pintía wineries were established by the Alvarez family in the vicinity to create modern-style Tinto Fino red wines aged in new French oak barrels.
