The University of Tartu was founded by the Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus in 1632. The Main Building of the University, designed by the University's architect J. W. Krause was built in 1803-1809 on the site of St. Mary's church, which was destroyed in the Nordic War. The portico of the main facade has become the symbol of higher education in Estonia. The festive hall of the University is the most beautiful Empire-style hall with the best acoustics in Estonia. In 1856-1859 the wings and the church were built, designed by K. Rathaus. Since 1868 the southern wing has housed an art museum - the oldest museum in Estonia, which was founded in 1803. The central part of the Main Building and the festive hall burned in 1965, but were restored by 1967.
