The Alumnatas was a theological school established by the pope in 1582. Here students from Scandinavian, Central and Southern Europe studied and lived. The purpose of this seminary patronised by the Jesuits was to train priests for missions in the East, as Vilnius was particularly suitable for this purpose strategically. In 1569, the Catholic and Orthodox Churches in the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania were united on the basis of the Union of Brest. Therefore, the pope dedicated special attention and put considerable effort into educating priests for the Uniate (Greek Catholic) Church. The Alumnatas courtyard is one of the most beautiful examples of the Late Renaissance architecture in Vilnius. The ensemble, which was reconstructed in 1622, is composed of a representative closed courtyard with arcades and a semi-closed courtyard which overlooks the present day courtyard of the Presidential Palace. In 1985, the architect Vytenis Jankunas designed a sculpture titles the "Alumnatas Baby Elephants" reminding of the chess-player's club which was operating in the vicinity.
