Since King Sejong the Great (1408-1450) constructed the residence of his son Prince Yeongeung in 1449, this site has served as the residence of princes and princesses of Joseon dynasty (1392-1897). In 1880, King Gojong founded Andong Palace, which was used as the site of the last Emperor of the Korean Empire (1907-1910) Sunjong's wedding ceremony in 1880 and 1906. Andong Palace was sold to an individual in 1936 and lost its original form following the construction of Poongmoon school on the very land. In 2017, the Seoul Metropolitan Government purchased the land to establish the Museum of Seoul Craft Art and the site was excavated in 2017 and 2020. Excavated relics were preserved in accordance with professional standards of the Korean Government and the Museum of Seoul Craft Art was opened in 2021.
