Waterfall 'Ventas rumba' is the widest waterfall in Europe (249 meters). Written information about the waterfall was first mentioned in 1242 when the Sword Brothers' Order started to build a castle on the left bank of the river Venta near to the waterfall, and used the dolomite of the river to build the castle. In the 17th century Europeans knew Kuldiga as a town where salmon were caught in air due to unique fishing devices that were invented by Duke Jacob. It was possible to catch approximately 80-100 salmon per day with these devices. Like in ancient times (9th century), in the Middle Ages, during Dukes' reign and even at the beginning of the 20th century the river Venta was navigable for ships in the route Kuldiga - Ventspils.

The River Narva has been a border river for centuries. The borderline between Russian and Danish territories was already established in 1242 and for the purpose of protection against any kind of threats coming from Russia, castles were built to secure the border line. After the Livonian Order had gained control over most of the present territory of Estonia, the master of the order, Goswin von Herike, built the first castle in order to protect the border line at Vasknarva in 1349. The Vasknarva Castle formed the centre of the Vasknarva bailiwick of the Livonian Order. Yet, the first castle did not last for long and it was destroyed by the Russians the very same year. The building of the new castle (parts of which have remained until today) was started in 1427 and it was finished at the latest by 1442. The Vasknarva Castle consists of a central keep surrounded by a curtain wall fortress. The three-storey keep, made of limestone and built onto the old foundation, has a rectangular ground plan (22.5 x 14.7 meters) showing extraordinary thick walls (2.6-3.6 meters). For the purpose of building, limestone rock was broken from the riverbed in front of the castle and from the moat. Since the castle was located in an area, which was frequently flooded, the basements of the building were built even to the ground surface or even a bit higher. The central building was surrounded by a curtain wall fortress with diagonal towers having an area of 1337 meters squared. The diameter of the artillery towers located at the northwest and southeast corners amounted to 12-12.5 meters. The gatehouse could be found inside the northern wall.
