The Brașovia Citadel, one of the seven castles contributing to the German name for Transylvania, 'Siebenbürgen,' was constructed atop Tâmpa Mountain. Likely built during the era of the Teutonic Knights (1212–1218), it offered refuge from threats like Tatar raids and Turkish invasions. The citadel's strategic importance led to it being taken by the Turks, causing distress to Brașov's populace. After reclaiming it with the aid of John Hunyadi, the inhabitants chose to demolish the fortress, repurposing its stones for a valley citadel. The stone citadel featured a polygonal tower on the western side, small defense towers along its walls, and chambers within the southern walls. A chapel and deep well were also present. Surrounded by cliffs on three sides, it was virtually impregnable and was yielded through treaties rather than force. The fortress's remote location necessitated supplies being brought via Drumul Cavalerilor (the Knights' Road) from the Cutun valley. Even in the early 20th century, local traditions persisted, with celebrations near the citadel, demonstrating its enduring significance.
