Žiče Charterhouse, alternatively known as Seiz Charterhouse (German: Kartäuserkloster Seiz, Latin: Domus in Valle Sancti Johannis), stood as a Carthusian monastery nestled in the narrow Žičnica Creek valley, named Saint John the Baptist Valley (Slovene: dolina svetega Janeza Krstnika) after the adjacent St. John the Baptist church. Situated near the villages of Žiče (German: Seitzdorf) and Špitalič pri Slovenskih Konjicah in the Municipality of Slovenske Konjice in northeastern Slovenia, this monastery was a pioneering Carthusian establishment within the German sphere, marking the earliest of its kind beyond the borders of France or Italy at that time.Between 1155 and 1165, Ottokar III of Styria, the Margrave of Styria, and his son, Duke Ottokar IV of Styria, both from the house of Traungau, established the Žiče Charterhouse, where they were later interred. The monastery's founding document from 1165, stored in the Styrian Provincial archive in Graz, Austria, names Beremund as the inaugural prior of Žiče Charterhouse. Carthusian monks and laymen from France's Grande Chartreuse near Grenoble, under the leadership of Prior Beremund, Count of Cornwall and prior of Durbon Charterhouse in Provence, settled in the monastery. During the Great Schism in the western Roman Catholic Church, Roman Pope Urban VI transferred the seat of the prior general of the Carthusian order to Žiče Charterhouse for nearly two decades (1391-1410). Three Žiče priors—John from Bari (1391), Christopher (1391-1398), and Stephen Maconi from Siena (1398-1410)—ascended to the role of prior general, empowering the Žiče charterhouse to influence the Carthusian order's policies and crucial decisions during that era.Žiče Charterhouse's architectural layout followed the Chartusian design, featuring two main sections: the Upper Monastery (Domus Superior) and the Lower Monastery (Domus Inferior). The Upper Monastery accommodated cloistered monks devoted to contemplative life, comprising cells connected by the Great Cloister and a cemetery. In the 15th century, the central crucifix was replaced by a cemetery chapel where priors were buried. The Lesser Cloister, serving as an entry to the St. John the Baptist church, linked communal areas like the Chapter house, Refectory, Kitchen, and Dormitory. Meanwhile, the Lower Monastery in Špitalič housed lay monks engaged in agricultural labor and crafts, providing support to the upper monastery. Their charitable activities included running a Hospice offering aid to the needy, providing essentials and medicines sourced from Carthusian libraries. After dissolution, all the buildings in Špitalič were demolished, except for the church.
