The Castle of Pazin stands as the largest and best-preserved medieval fortress in Istria, holding immense historical, architectural, and monumental significance. Its documented history dates back to 983, witnessing a series of transformations—presented as gifts, conquered, ravaged, rebuilt, and leased multiple times. Passing through various dominions, it was once under the control of the Patriarchate of Aquileia and later under the County of Gorizia, offering security to the Middle Istrian area known as Graftschhaft Mitterburg, Contea di Pisino, or the County of Pazin. Pazin Castle, also known as Kaštel Pazin (Croatian), Castello di Pisino (Italian), and Mitterburg (German), stands as a medieval fortress perched atop solid rock at the heart of Pazin, the administrative hub of Istria County, Croatia. As the largest and most well-preserved castle in the region, it commands a view over the deep gorge of the Pazinčica Foiba river, a karstic subterranean river that vanishes into a sinkhole at that point and flows underground. Constructed primarily from hewn stone, this fortified structure has undergone numerous reconstructions and renovations throughout its 11-century-long history. Within Pazin Castle, visitors can explore two museums: the Ethnographic Museum of Istria and the Pazin Town Museum. The Pazin Castle, historically known as Castrum Pisinum, has a rich and varied past. Initially mentioned in 983 in a document by Otto II, Holy Roman Emperor, it was owned successively by the bishops of Poreč, the Schwarzenburg family, and various counts and margraves of Gorizia and Istria. In 1374, upon the death of Albert IV, Margrave of Gorizia, the castle fell under the House of Habsburg's possession, enduring a series of rentals or mortgages to noblemen closely associated with the Habsburgs. Eventually, in 1766, it was sold to Antonio Laderchi de Montecuccoli, remaining in his family's ownership until 1945. Over 200 years, the castle witnessed numerous changes in ruling powers: transitioning from the Venetian Republic to the Habsburg Monarchy, Napoleon's French Empire, back to the Habsburg Monarchy, then Italy, Yugoslavia, and finally Croatia in 1991. Functioning as the administrative seat for the County of Pazin or County of Istria, it was governed either by a castle captain or the count.
