The Durrës Amphitheatre is a unique public monument in Albania. It has been built near the traditional center of the city, on the field ground and partly on the hill. This Amphitheatre it is estimated as an engineering and architectural colossus of ancient times and the work of  local masters. It has an ellipse shape with a diameter of 136 meters and a height of about 20 meters. It was built in the beginning of the II century. At the time of Roman Emperor Trajan (98-117). There were about 15-20 thousand spectators, attending matches between gladiators. The main entrance was situated in the northern part and an exit to the southern part on the same axis. The eastern facade faced the city center and was a double-decker with columns and arches on to a decorative structure with windows. The discovery of the arena will clarify the function of the amphitheater. Games at the ancient amphiteaters were stopped by the Roman Emperor honor in 404 A.D. The discovery of the amphitheater began in 1966 until 1970. Parallel with the monument, medieval tombs were discovered in the arena area. In the coming years there have been several expeditions, which have completed the documentary and the architectonic data on this monument. There is a church and Mosaic in the Amphitheater. After the interrupton of games at the amphitheater, a church (chapel) was built around V-VI centuries A.D., where the religious and funeral ceremonies of the Durrës christian groupls were held. Originally the church was decorated with frescoes. Its longevity attests to subsequent interferences (dating VI-VII centuries), by decorating both sides, southern and western, with unique mural mosaic panels. This mosaic is dedicated to Saint-Stephen. The martyr of the city of Durrës. In continuation, Saint Mary is depicted as a Byzantine Empress surrounded by two angels, the first with an inscription on the top, and at the feet two other accompanying figures in miniature. The western facade preserves fragments of two saints, Saint Sophia and Saint Irini with their respective names. The eastern gallery served as refuge for Christian communities, decorated with a frescoes with Saint Gabriel's image.
